A little history
From the early 18th century until the last world war, the small fjord community, Indre Ofredal , a bustling town founded on water as a driving force for the mill and sawmill. The forest in Ofredal was, and is, of good quality. The products from the sawmill were transported to Bergen by its own parish cart, and with it the parish cart brought back merchant goods that were resold to parishioners who came to Ofredalen by rowboat to trade and grind grain. The old mill, which is made of wood, can still be seen today.
Indre Ofredal was also the headquarters of the mayor of Årdal from 1860 until the mid-1890s, he then had an office on the second floor of the seaport.
The site is an old industrial area where sawmilling was the main industry, and most of the planks that were sawn were delivered to Bergen.
Fruit was also grown and delivered to Bergen and other customers in Sogn. There was a post office and telegraph here, the post office was closed in 1987.
